Zimanga – Magical Wildlife Moments in South Africa
If you’re traveling all the way to South Africa, cutting days short would be a waste. That’s why this tour is longer than most – giving you the time and depth this location deserves.

NEW SINCE 2024:
Now fully all-inclusive, including all extra beverages (except premium wines and similar). On five to six game drives, we also utilize up to two custom Land Cruisers with low-angle photographic platforms that allow you to shoot from a lying position – essential for that immersive wildlife perspective.

A Reserve Built for Photographers
Zimanga is a private reserve entirely dedicated to wildlife photography. It offers spectacular photographic game drives and one-of-a-kind photo hides, originally designed by Hungarian master photographer Bence Máté. By 2026, new bird hides – and possibly a bat hide – will be added inside the fenced lodge area.

This isn’t just world-class wildlife photography – it’s also a luxury safari experience. The food and lodging are first-class. Our group stays in beautiful detached villas located within the reserve, ensuring close proximity to both hides and game drive routes. Each guest has their own private house, not a cramped hotel room – and despite the upgraded comfort, the cost per day remains highly competitive.

Night Hides Like No Other
Two of the hides are designed for night photography, accommodating up to four photographers. You shoot through glass at eye-level with the water, sitting virtually “underwater” in a reinforced bunker that could withstand elephants walking over it.
Behind the sunken photo area, each participant has a personal bed to rest between sightings, and a private back room includes a kitchen and full bathroom. The setup offers unmatched photographic comfort.

Birdlife & Iconic Raptors
Zimanga also boasts incredible bird photography. Several hides focus on bird baths, water-level or ground-level setups – including a vulture hide regularly visited by up to 20–30 vultures and raptors. Backgrounds are placed kilometers away for clean, isolated compositions. Warthogs, spotted hyenas, and porcupines are common visitors too.

Over time, more species have begun using the night hides, including African buffalo, rhinos, lions, elephants, antelope, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, servals, and even the rare brown hyena and caracal. In 2023, green monkeys visited at night to drink just meters in front of the lens.

A Vision for Ethical Wildlife Tourism
Zimanga was founded by Charl Senekal – photographer, reserve manager, and zoology PhD candidate – as a counterpoint to the trophy hunting industry. Disillusioned by private reserves profiting from big-game hunting, Charl built Zimanga for photographers and nature lovers instead.

The reserve plays an active role in rhino and elephant conservation, with 14 armed rangers patrolling day and night to protect against poachers. A portion of your tour fee helps support these vital efforts.

Location & Season
Zimanga lies in the southwestern region of Zululand, approximately 13 km long and recently expanded by integrating land previously used for sugar farming. Charl’s family still runs the sugar operations.

Brutus Östling has visited Zimanga nearly a dozen times since 2015 and led groups on five expeditions. This tour is scheduled for the ideal season: July–August, South Africa’s dry winter. During this time, wildlife is more active around waterholes, making for optimal game drives and hide photography.

Luxury Accommodation for Photographers
Each guest enjoys a private villa with a terrace overlooking the reserve. Every room is thoughtfully equipped for photographers – multiple power outlets, dual work desks, and spacious interiors. Charl, being a photographer himself, was deeply involved in the lodge’s design.

Beside the open-air dining area is a dedicated projection room with a top-tier projector, where we’ll hold one or two mini-workshops and share images throughout the 10-day experience.

Wildlife Highlights
The reserve hosts an impressive diversity: lions, white and black rhinos, cheetahs, leopards, both spotted and brown hyenas, jackals, servals, wildebeest, Cape buffalo, zebras, giraffes, elephants, and countless antelope species. Birdlife is equally rich, with hundreds of species nesting or migrating through the area.

For birds, Zimanga offers dedicated hides, including bird baths (sometimes visited by mongooses) and two bee-eater hides. Atop a hill, the vulture hide is likely the finest in all of Africa for photographing these majestic scavengers.

A Legacy of Conservation
Zimanga supported African wild dogs for over a decade, and hopes to reintroduce the species as part of its conservation work. The reserve helped establish 10 new packs in parks and reserves across and beyond South Africa.

Most species can be photographed on classic game drives, with guides coordinating sightings via ranger patrols and GPS tracking. Often, we know where to go for the best chances – though sometimes the abundance of options becomes the biggest challenge.

About the Vehicles & Shooting Setup
All photo vehicles are customized 4-row Land Cruisers, giving each photographer their own row. Off-road driving is allowed where it doesn’t disrupt wildlife behavior, though dense bush or mud may limit access in some areas.

Guides are photographers themselves, ensuring optimal vehicle positioning for light and subject. For example, Hendri Venter, one of South Africa’s top wildlife photographers, often leads or assists.

A Photographer’s Dream Setup
Many hides are positioned at natural waterholes, with two built for night use, complete with lighting, kitchens, bathrooms, electricity, microwaves, kettles, and fridges.

Expect visits from warthogs, rhinos, buffalo, antelope, lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, servals – even giraffes during daylight. The images you can create here often surpass what many dream of achieving in a lifetime.

The hides are also productive for birds, especially early and late in the day. Spotted eagle-owls are common nighttime visitors.

In the lagoon hide, we photograph a wide variety of waders, herons, and rarities like thick-knees, white-faced ducks, bronze ibis, lapwings, and even crocodiles – all from eye-level with the waterline. Hippos and crocs are mostly concentrated in the reserve’s main dam, where the river flows through.

What’s Included in the Experience
Over ten days, you’ll rotate between a rich mix of game drives and hide sessions. Whether you’re focused on mammals, birds, or artistic compositions, Zimanga delivers with unmatched access, expert guidance, and creature comfort.

All details are subject to minor changes or adjustments based on wildlife conditions and logistics.

Your journey begins and ends at King Shaka International Airport in Durban.

Our adventure begins with a morning pickup at 8:00 AM from King Shaka International Airport in Durban. After arriving at Zimanga, we’ll enjoy a light lunch and settle into our luxurious accommodations. In the afternoon, Brutus and the expert Zimanga guides will hold a short welcome briefing, followed by our first photo session — either a game drive or time in one of the world-class photography hides, starting around 3:00–3:30 PM.

Each day offers a dynamic mix of wildlife photography from Zimanga’s world-renowned hides and exciting game drives across the reserve. We’ll typically head out for one activity in the early morning and another in the late afternoon, following a carefully balanced schedule that ensures all participants receive equal opportunities for both types of sessions.

During the trip, Brutus will host one or two focused photography workshops, offering inspiration, technique tips, and storytelling insights. Midway through the journey, we’ll also gather to review each other’s best images — a chance to learn, reflect, and connect over shared experiences.

Between activities, you’ll have time to unwind and enjoy the comforts of the lodge, or dive into editing your photos at your own pace — the balance of productivity and luxury is yours to choose.

We begin the final day with one last morning safari or hide session — a final chance to capture the magic of Zimanga. Afterward, we enjoy a relaxed brunch at the lodge before being transferred back to King Shaka International Airport in Durban.

Why Zimanga Is in a League of Its Own

We rent the entire reserve exclusively for our group – no other photographers, no crowding at sightings, and no queues of safari vehicles vying for position. It’s just us, the wildlife, and the freedom to focus entirely on the experience.

When traveling all the way to South Africa, cutting the trip short would be a mistake. That’s why this photo tour is longer than most – allowing you to fully immerse yourself in everything Zimanga has to offer.

We’ve selected a luxurious lodge for our stay – a place that feels like a true holiday, with spacious private houses instead of cramped shared rooms. Yet despite the premium comfort, the cost per photography day remains on par with far more basic alternatives.

Why August?

August sits right at the peak of the dry season, making it one of the best months for wildlife photography in the entire year. It also offers clear, dark skies for Milky Way photography – perfect conditions for astrophotographers and night shooters alike.

World-Class Hides and Unique Opportunities

Zimanga’s photographic hides are truly world-class, allowing you to capture both birds and mammals from ground or water level with clean backgrounds and intimate perspectives.

Off-road driving is allowed throughout the reserve, as long as it does not disturb the animals, which opens up far more creative options compared to most African safari parks.

Because we have exclusive access, every participant is guaranteed at least three nights in the hides – a rare privilege that drastically increases your chances of capturing once-in-a-lifetime images.

On Foot, On Ground, On Point

For certain species, like cheetahs, we sometimes approach on foot – giving you the chance to photograph from true ground level, something that’s rarely possible in traditional vehicle-based safaris.

Zimanga is home to plenty of large game – antelope, wildebeest, Cape buffalo – but you may also witness dramatic action, such as lions or cheetahs on the hunt. These moments are raw, rare, and unforgettable.

Low-Angle Shooting from Custom Vehicles

As of 2024, we have access to specially modified Land Cruisers with built-in low-angle shooting platforms. These let you lie down and shoot at wildlife eye level – something that’s almost impossible on standard safari tours. Between 2025 and 2026, more customized jeeps will be added, further enhancing our mobility and access.

At the large dam where the river flows through the reserve, hippos and crocodiles can often be photographed from the shoreline – or even water level, if you’re lying down. The photographic perspective is unmatched.

Comfort, Proximity, and Design with Photographers in Mind

The lodge is centrally located inside the reserve, close to both the hides and the safari routes. You won’t waste precious light driving long distances. Accommodation and cuisine are both first-class, with all rooms designed specifically with photographers in mind.

Each guest stays in a private detached house, with ample space, personal workstations, plenty of charging points, and a private terrace overlooking the bush. It’s a base designed for both comfort and productivity.

The Vulture Hide – A Unique Experience

The vulture hide seats four photographers and is visited daily by 20–30 vultures, often joined by various raptors, warthogs, jackals, and spotted hyenas. On some days, even porcupines show up.

This hide is built to give you clean compositions with distant backgrounds, allowing you to isolate birds and mammals alike for powerful, editorial-quality images. It’s an extraordinary place for capturing dramatic raptor and scavenger behavior up close.

Traveler Reviews – Zimanga Photo Safari

Our photo safaris at Zimanga have left a lasting impression on photographers from around the world. Here’s what past participants have shared about their experience — both behind the lens and beyond.
  • The Zimanga Photo Tour was, without a doubt, the best photographic trip I’ve ever done in Africa.

And that’s saying something. I’ve previously been to both Masai Mara and Amboseli, but nothing compares to Zimanga. The hides, the close encounters, the photographic opportunities… absolutely world-class.
    Oskar Lindberg
  • I’ve done a few photo safaris before, but nothing quite like this one. The hides gave me space and quiet—time to really focus. It wasn’t rushed or chaotic. The light, the closeness to the animals, the stillness… everything just clicked.

I came home with some of the strongest images I’ve ever taken.

We recommend you consult your travel clinic or healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your medical history and the time of year you’re visiting.

As for vaccinations, South Africa does not require any specific immunizations for entry from Europe. However, it’s generally advised to be up to date on routine vaccinations such as tetanus, hepatitis A, and typhoid, especially for rural travel.
