Why this trip
Grizzlies at Nakina River
Taku Wilderness, British Columbia
Imagine flying in by helicopter over a vast landscape of rivers, forests, mountains and untouched wilderness. Below you, the Nakina River winds through northern British Columbia, deep within the larger Taku River system – one of North America's great wilderness areas, far from roads, communities and the classic tourist routes.
When the helicopter lands at camp and then lifts off again, everything changes.
Now it's just us, the guides, the river, the forest, the eagles and the grizzlies left behind.
This is not an ordinary bear trip. It is an exclusive wilderness experience where we live in the midst of the bears' landscape and photograph them where they belong: along the river, at the forest edge, on the gravel banks, among the salmon and sometimes in the immediate vicinity of camp.
A more private and intimate bear experience
Many bear trips in North America head to the most famous places – iconic destinations with open landscapes, dramatic views and well-known photo opportunities. That can be fantastic.
But Nakina River offers something different.
Here it's not about standing on a classic stage together with other groups. Here we find ourselves in a more remote, more intimate and more enveloping river and forest wilderness, where the bears move naturally through the landscape.
A grizzly may come wandering along the shore.
A female with cubs may appear at the forest edge.
A bear may fish for salmon in the river while eagles patrol overhead.
It's less arena – more wilderness. Less spectacle – more presence.
Grizzlies, eagles and a living salmon river
The main attraction is grizzlies, but this is not just a bear trip.
The Nakina River is part of a rich wilderness system where the salmon attract both bears and eagles. There are plenty of eagles here, often with fine opportunities to photograph them as they perch in the trees along the river, patrol over the water or strike after fish themselves.
That gives the trip an extra dimension.
Grizzlies along the river. Eagles in the air. Salmon in the water. Forest, mountains, mist, gravel banks and the constant sound of the wilderness around camp.
It is precisely this whole that makes this trip so special. We travel not just to get occasional close-ups of bears, but to photograph an entire landscape where the grizzly is the main character – but where the eagles, the river and the light are part of the story.
8 days – because time is the greatest luxury in the wilderness
We choose a longer setup with 8 days on location.
This is a deliberate choice.
In a wild environment you cannot order up perfect light, the right bear, salmon action, eagles in flight or a female with cubs in exactly the right spot. The bears move according to weather, water levels, salmon, food and their own rhythms. One day may be calm. The next morning may be unforgettable.
That is why extra time is not just a convenience – it is a photographic advantage.
More time means more chances for the right light, more encounters, more behaviours and greater opportunity to create a strong series of images from the location. Not just documenting that you have seen a grizzly, but getting images with feeling, environment, drama and story.
When you travel this far, to a place like this, the time with the bears is what you should not skimp on.
Wilderness camp with comfort
Despite the remote location, we stay comfortably in a real wilderness camp by the Nakina River. Here there are cabins, electricity, showers, heating, good meals and a safe base in the midst of the wilderness.
After long days out by the river we can return to camp, charge our batteries, go through images and prepare for the next photo session, rested after a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed.
It is rustic enough to feel authentic, but comfortable enough to let you put your energy into what matters most: the photography and the experience.
And that very closeness is part of the magic. Here the bears are not something you just drive out to see for a few hours a day. You are in their landscape. You wake up in their world.
Who is this trip for?
This trip suits you who want more than a classic bear destination.
It suits you who want time in the field, closeness to the wilderness and the opportunity to create a stronger narrative in your images. You don't need to be a professional photographer, but you should appreciate serious nature photography, flexible days, early mornings and letting nature itself set the pace.
This is for you who want to experience grizzlies for real – not just see them.
