Expedition

In pursuit of the jaguar ## There are places where nature still feels truly wild. The Pantanal is one of them. A massive wetland landscape in the heart of South America, where the rivers dictate the rhythm, where fog hangs low over the water at dawn, and where every bend might conceal something unforgettable. A caiman at the water's edge. A giant otter breaking the surface. A jabiru stork backlit. Or that gaze you've traveled all this way to encounter. The jaguar. FocusRAW is planning an exclusive photography trip to the Pantanal in 2027 – a journey created for photographers who want to maximize their time where the chances are greatest: out on the rivers, in the right areas, during the right season, and with complete focus on photography. We travel by boat through a landscape where the jaguar is the obvious main attraction, but never the only story. The Pantanal is one of the world's most concentrated wilderness areas for photographers. Here we encounter rich wildlife with giant otters, capybaras, caimans, tapirs, hyacinth macaws, toucans, birds of prey, and countless other species that make each day unpredictable. But it's the jaguar that draws us here. Photographing jaguars in the Pantanal isn't about brief encounters from a vehicle. It's about reading the river. Scanning the shorelines. Waiting. Following tracks, movements, and signals. Sometimes you only catch a glimpse through the branches. Sometimes it lies still in the shadow. Sometimes it steps down into the water, swims across the river, and disappears as quickly as it came. And sometimes everything happens. A hunting attempt. A gaze straight into the camera. A jaguar in perfect light along the riverbank. A moment that can't be ordered, only earned through time, patience, and presence. This won't be a classic comfortable photo tour where we check off species and move on. This will be a FocusRAW journey. Long days in the field. Early mornings. Heat, dust, water, waiting, and concentration. A small group of photographers with the same goal: to create powerful images, not just collect sightings. We build the trip for you who prefer fewer participants, more time in the right environment, and a clear photographic vision over a generic safari program. For you who know that the best images often come after many hours of nothing. For you who don't just want to see the Pantanal, but work with the place. The Pantanal is raw, alive, and unpredictable. Just as a FocusRAW journey should be.

Wildlife Photography in South America

South America is home to some of the world's most sought-after photographic subjects — the jaguar in the Pantanal, giant otters in crystal-clear rivers, and an astonishing diversity of tropical birds. The Pantanal in Brazil is the world's best place to photograph jaguars in the wild.

Our photo tours to South America take you to the Pantanal where you photograph from boats along the river, right at water level for dramatic perspectives. Jaguars, caimans, giant otters, and hundreds of bird species are all within reach on a single trip.

With experienced photo guides and small groups, we maximise your chances of capturing unique images of South America's most fascinating wildlife. The dry season (June-October) provides the best conditions as wildlife concentrates along the shrinking waterways.
