What sets a photo safari apart from a regular safari?

A photo safari is a fundamentally different experience from a traditional safari trip. While the conventional safari prioritises seeing as many animals as possible during brief stops, the photo safari is built around a single philosophy: giving you the best possible conditions for exceptional images.

At Focus Photo Tours, every photo safari to Africa is planned by experienced wildlife photographers. The schedule follows the light, not tourist routines. Early mornings in the golden hour, long sessions at waterholes and hides, and the flexibility to stay when a lion or leopard gives you the perfect photographic moment — that's a real photo safari.

The photography hides at Zimanga in South Africa and Mana Pools in Zimbabwe are among the world's absolute elite for wildlife photography. The low angle, water surface, and platforms on specially adapted vehicles give you perspectives that are impossible to achieve on a regular safari. Big Five photography, night photography in the hide, and walking safaris in Mana Pools — these are the experiences that define a genuine photo safari in Africa.

What's included in a Focus photo safari?

Specialist vehicles with low-angle platforms

Vehicles adapted for photography with low platforms give you perspectives at eye level with the animals — a dramatic difference from standard safari's elevated seating.

World-leading photography hides

Day and night hides at waterholes give you hours of controlled photography at extremely close range. Zimanga offers some of the world's finest photography hides.

Professional photo guides

All guides are active wildlife photographers with deep knowledge of animal behaviour, light optimisation and photographic technique. Personal mentoring in the field.

All-inclusive

Accommodation, meals, all transfers and safari drives included. No surprises — you focus on the photography, we take care of the rest.

Small groups (max 14–18)

Limited group sizes ensure every photographer has enough space, room at the hide and personal guidance.

Photo safari in Africa — everything you need to know

A photo safari in Africa is the dream destination for many wildlife photographers. The continent's combination of species diversity, open landscapes and dramatic lighting conditions creates conditions for images that are difficult to produce anywhere else on earth. Photo safari South Africa and photo safari Zimbabwe are among the most popular destinations for serious nature photographers.

Zimanga Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, offers a unique concept for wildlife photography safari. The reserve's purpose-built photography hides placed directly at waterholes give photographers the opportunity to sit just centimetres away from drinking lions, leopards, rhinos and elephants. The low-angle perspective and controlled lighting create conditions for Big Five photography that are hard to beat. Photo safari Africa Zimanga is an obvious choice for those seeking world-class photographic opportunities.

Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is one of Africa's most iconic destinations for photo safari and wildlife photography. A UNESCO World Heritage site on the Zambezi River with the unique opportunity for walking safaris — you photograph Big Five and other wildlife on foot, without protective cage or vehicle. The elephants of Mana Pools are known for standing on their hind legs to reach acacia fruits, a subject that has become an icon of African wildlife photography.

The best season for a photo safari in Africa varies by destination. In South Africa and Zimbabwe, the dry season from May to October is ideal — wildlife concentrates around water resources, vegetation is sparser and better illuminated, and lighting conditions are generally superior. Many specifically seek photo safari in Africa during winter months to combine the African experience with an escape from Northern European cold.

Equipment for a photo safari in Africa: a telephoto lens of 500–600mm is the standard recommendation for Big Five photography at distance. Complement with a 70–200mm or 100–400mm for more flexible work at hides. A bean bag or vehicle mount is essential. Many photo safaris include equipment advice from the guide before the trip.
